The park was named after Matiur Rahman, a student killed by police during the anti-Ayub Khan protests. The martyrdom of Matiur fueled the uprising that eventually brought Pakistan President General Ayub Khan's autocratic regime to an end.

Shohid Motiur Rahman Park holds great historical and emotional value for us. We visited it with great homage. The place was full of nice monuments. The natural beauty and calmness of the place really attracted us. The place is quite safe and peaceful for morning walks.
