Islamic centre of Male is one of the most famous and beautiful architectural sites of Maldives. The centre is located at the northern side of the capital city and is a fine example of Islamic architecture. It is officially known as Masjid al Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam. This landmark of Islamic heritage was inaugurated in 1984 by the then president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The mosque is one of the largest in South Asia and named after one of the most celebrated Maldivian heroes. The center has a conference hall and a Islamic library as well.

The interior of the building is beautifully decorated with chandeliers, woodcarvings and impressive Arabic calligraphy, which implies the importance of Islam and it's teachings in the country. The building lights up during the Friday prayer session, accommodating up to 5000 worshippers. The massive golden dome and a graceful minaret remarkably dominates the city's skyline. The stunning yet simple design of the center welcome travellers and architect lovers throughout the year.
