Address: Male

What Mabela Ahmed saying about this place:

Maldives' National Museum, The very first museum of Maldives was established and opened on the country's National Day in 1952, with the goal of preserving and displaying the unique history of these remote islands. Mohamed Amin Didi, the country's Prime Minister at the time, inaugurated this well-organized museum made of steel and glass, which houses an extraordinary collection of historical items from this tiny island nation in the Indian Ocean.

A broad variety of diverse items are on exhibit in the museum, including remnants of the pre-Islamic period, thrones, royal sunshades and furnishings, costumes and shoes, coins, jewelry, arms and armor, and more. Textiles such as ceremonial costumes, turbans, fancy slippers, and belts worn on important occasions, mats, lacquer work, and other artistic embroidery reflecting people's intriguing lives are also included in the other collection. One of the primary attractions at the Museum is beautifully carved wood that represents the Maldives' significant conversion to Islam in the year 1153.

The museum exhibits a broad collection of historical artifacts and royal treasures dating from the Buddhist era through the reigns of Muslim kings. The tour begins downstairs, with galleries depicting Maldivian history from the ancient through medieval periods. Weaponry, religious objects, political images, and home commodities are among the items on display.

The most impressive aspect of this two-floored building is the display of some prized examples of the lacquer-work boxes for which Maldives is famous, and various pieces of antique technology such as the country’s first gramophone, telephone and a massive computer representing the modern period. Broken pieces of Buddhist and Hindu idols, depictions of political events and, most crucially, a replica of the pen used to sign the ‘Declaration of Independence’ from the British Empire bring the tourist’s attention.
