Oregon Trunk Rail Bridge Historical Facts
Before construction, the only attempt to cross the Crooked River in this zone was about a mile edge routers, where the canyon's sheer basalt walls emerged to taper incrementally into the surrounding region. Ralph Modjeski, a well-known civil engineer, designed the 460-foot-long bridge, which is perched on abutments 320 feet above the river. It's among the country's majestic railway bridges. Workers climbed rope ladders and waded or went swimming across the river to get from one side of the gorge to the other.
