About Fort Randall Dam Visitor Center

Edit

The Fort Randall Dam Visitor Center in South Dakota offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and engineering behind one of the Missouri River’s mainstem dams. Spanning 2.03 miles across the Missouri River, the Fort Randall Dam impounds Lake Francis Case, the 11th-largest reservoir in the United States. The dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and plays a crucial role in hydroelectric power generation and flood control in the region.

Authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1944, the dam was part of the broader Pick-Sloan Plan to develop water resources in the Missouri River basin. Construction began in 1946, and by 1954, the first power-generating unit was operational, inaugurated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The dam was fully completed in 1956 at a cost of approximately $200 million. The eight generating units of Fort Randall Dam can produce up to 320 megawatts of electricity, supplying power to around 245,000 households annually.

The Fort Randall Dam Visitor Center, situated on the western edge of Pickstown, SD, offers visitors an educational experience through its exhibits on the dam’s construction, local cultural and natural history, and paleontology. The center also features a freshwater aquarium with fish species native to the Missouri River, providing an engaging experience for all ages. Outside the visitor center, guests can explore Lewis and Clark wayside exhibits and enjoy scenic views of the dam, Lake Francis Case, and the Missouri River.

Visitors can learn about the importance of the Fort Randall Dam in flood control, especially during the 2011 Missouri River Floods, when the dam released a record 143,000 cubic feet per second of water. The Fort Randall Dam is a vital part of the Missouri River’s infrastructure, contributing to the region’s water management, power supply, and recreational opportunities.
Open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Fort Randall Dam Visitor Center is free to the public and provides wheelchair accessibility. Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or simply enjoying a peaceful day by the water, the visitor center offers something for everyone. With its rich history and beautiful surroundings, Fort Randall Dam Visitor Center is a must-visit destination for travelers in South Dakota.
