Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, now a complete forest reserve with a horde of flora and fauna enriching its ecology, was once only a water catchment area. The main river here is Bagmati, which serves as one of the major sources of potable water for Kathmandu. Though the stream you find inside the city is more or less a running sledge, up in the mountains, its pristine form is visible to the naked eye. The national park is split into two distinct regions by the roads running north from the capital. The majority of the park is located directly north of Budanilkantha, on the trekking trail to Helambu, but there is also a second forested zone called Rani Ban, uphill from Balaku on road towards the beautiful Trishuli Bazaar, encircling the 2,095m Nagarjun Hill.
