We were mesmerized visited the sixty dome mosque. There are 77 domes arranged is 7 rows consisting 11 domes in each row and 4 domes in the 4 corners. So there are actually 81 domes in total. The interior of the mosque is fascinating with many aisles, bays and columns.

History of Sixty Dome Mosque

It is the largest mosque in Bangladesh from the sultanate period (1204-1576). It was built during the Bengal Sultanate by Ulugh Khan Jahan, the governor of the Sundarbans. It has been described as "one of the most impressive Muslim monuments in the whole of the Indian subcontinent."

It is located in Bagerhat district in southern Bangladesh which is in Khulna Division. It is about 5 kilometres (3 mi) from the main town of Bagerhat.Bagerhat is nearly 320 km (200 mi) from Dhaka which is the capital of Bangladesh.

Name Significance of Sixty Dome Mosque

The mosque is locally known as the 'Shat Gombuj Masjid', which in Bengali means Sixty Domed Mosque. However, there are 77 domes over the main hall and exactly 60 stone pillars. It is possible that the mosque was originally referred to as the Sixty Pillared Mosque where Amud (شصت عمؤد ) meaning column in Arabic/Persian, later got corrupted to Gombuj in Bengali, which means domes.

Reaching to Sixty Dome Mosque

You can go directly to Bagerhat from Dhaka via buses including Meghna, Banaful, Tourist, Ara, Hamim, Falguni, Baleshwar, Dola etc. leaving from Saidabad in the early morning and evening renting BDT 400. The journey is about 7-8 hours. From Bagerhat bus stand, you can take rickshaw costing 30-40 tk to reach the mosque.

Visting hours of Sixty Dome Mosque

Summer: 10 am-6 pm. Winter: 9 am-5 pm. 1-1:30 pm in the lunch break. On Friday, it is closed from 12:30 pm to 3 pm. Sunday and Monday are weekly holidays.

The walls of the sixty dome mosque is unusually thick and made of tapered brick in the tughlaq style. The roof is heart shaped and there are arches to support the roof. The architecture is unusually beautiful and holds great architectural value of the sultanate times.

We visited this one of the most impressive Muslim monuments in the whole of the Indian subcontinent some years ago. It was built in between the years 1204-1576. It consists of an area of 1605 meter squares. This mosque was used for prayer as well as madrasa & great hall. The mosque represents beautiful archeological wonder.

The Shat Gombuj Masjid is a UNESCO world heritage site. It's one of the largest mosques of Bangladesh. We visited this mosque which is a sign of the sultanate period. Ulugh Khan Jahan, the governor of Sunderbans during the Bengali Sultanate period built this large mosque.
